Platelet rich plasma combined with subcision is a helpful therapeutic option for atrophic post-acne scarring

Abstract

Background: Acne scarring is believed to be a consequence of the damage that occurs in and around the pilosebaceous follicle during inflammation. So, it is very vital to reduce as far as possible the duration and intensity of the inflammation, thus stressing the importance of the acne treatment. In clinical practice, combination therapy by multiple agents is frequently required to improve the severity of post-acne scarring.
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of platelet rich plasma (PRP) as a combination therapy to subcision in the treatment of atrophic post acne scars.
Methods: 26 patients suffering from atrophic post acne scars received PRP injection in combination with subcision for 4 sessions with one month interval. The assessment were done using Goodman and Baron Scale and Global aesthetic improvement scale (GAIS) to evaluate the results after each treatment session and 6 months after the last treatment.
Results: according to GAIS 42.3% of patients had shown an improvement with a score of 2 and 7.7%of patients were with score of 1
Conclusion: PRP combined with subcision is very effective in treatment of atrophic post acne scars.
