Turmeric extract based therapy for psoriasis

Abstract

Background: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease affects 3 % of world population on average. Psoriasis can have disfiguring and disabling impacts on patients with increased global burden of the disease. According to WHO, there is continuous need for establishing new modalities for treatment of psoriasis with emphasis on treatment safety concerns of the patients.
Objectives: The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy and safety of turmeric extract based ointment in the treatment of mild to moderate psoriasis
Methods: 10 patients with psoriasis vulgaris confirmed histopathologically were recruited at Dermatology Department outpatient clinic Zagazig University Hospitals. The diseased severity were assessed clinically using PASI score and the histopathologic severity was assessed before and after 4 weeks of twice daily application the turmeric extract based ointment.
Results: Significant reduction in disease severity in all patients used treatment with PASI before PASI before treatment was 19.44 ± 10.7, and after was 10.5 ± 6.3 (P = 0.0007). There was 47% ± 12% improvement in disease severity, with 50% of patients already reached PASI 50 benchmark by 4th week of treatment.
Conclusions: In this pilot study, the effectiveness and tolerability of turmeric extract based ointment in the treatment of moderate psoriasis vulgaris was evaluated and proved on both clinical and histopathological levels.
